Learn Morse without really trying! I think not.

This pile of bull droppings appeared at QRZ.com in a prominent position on their ‘News’ page, which somewhat got up my nose. It is clearly not news but a blatant piece of advertising for what in my not so humble opinion is someone selling Snake Oil. If it had simply appeared in the forums, so be it but in the Internet equivalent to the front page of a newspaper it got my heckles up and I just had to say something. There are plenty of effective ways of learning Morse code and most are available free. My advice would be to steer well clear, these charlatans continue to perpetuate the myth that success can be bought when we all know it takes perseverance and hard work.

Success Easy has just converted all their CW training CDs to MP3 downloads. To celebrate, they are offering 25% off during the rest of October. All the CDs were produced by Peter O’Dell, WB2D, who is a professional hypnotist and trainer. It is a fast, fun way to boost your CW speed, and this way you do not have to pay any S/H charges and you get 25% off. The link is http://www.success-is-easy.com/HamDownLoads.htm and the coupon code is OctoberFest. –K0CS

As someone who grew up with a father who was a professional illusionist I know all too well that hypnosis is no more than a stage trick and has no basis in reality. The whole thing works on the basis that a percentage of the population are completely gullible and will believe they are under the hypnotists control combined with use of plants in the audience. I find it somewhat surprising that the majority of people I speak to believe this bunkum. It is time someone in the know stood up to the charlatans the way Houdini stood up to Spiritualists. Not that it would make much difference as people are still taken for a ride by those nutters.

Undoubtedly some people find these so called self hypnosis things helpful. I have listened to a few myself and they usually offer advice on positive thinking that is quite logical, but then they tie it up in bunkum. There is no self-hypnosis or induced trance except in the mind of the gullible who believe they are ‘under’. Some will say that if they believe they are hypnotized then they are but brain scans of people supposedly under hypnosis show otherwise.

Hypnosis is at best a placebo effect and at least it has persuaded thousands of people to give up smoking, but it is still not real. Many otherwise intelligent people such as those in the medical profession may be fooled, but it is just another pseudo-science proffered for sale by Snakeoil Salesmen. If only these guys would come clean and just sell positive thinking without the fake mysticism I would be happy, but in this world people need a crutch and the slick talking grease ball with the pocket watch will keep selling his placebo crutches.

I was quite pleased to see the number of sceptics that have already posted to the thread on QRZ, I think it shows most radio amateurs are men of science and not easily suckered. I now await the case for the defence starting with the one that starts “I bought these CDs yesterday and am already up to 40 words per minute.”

  1. Why are you so angry about hypnosis, or more correctly, hypnotherapy? You conflate hypnotherapy with stage shows but they are not the same. While I agree that there is a lot of fluff and nonsense bandied about you should not so readily dismiss the benefits of hypnotherapy. It is more than placebo. And it is my understanding that brain scans do show a difference when a person is in hypnosis. You are, however, correct in implying that suggestion is at the root of successful therapy.

    • My biggest problem is that it preys on the gullible and weak minded.

From everything I have read about hypnosis the principles of what I have seen on stage and TV is exactly the same as what is done in clinics. What is written in the so called scientific books is very similar to those written for stage presenters except there is less mumbo jumbo in the later.

Even if I believed there was such a thing as a hypnotic trance (which I do not) there are so many things hypnotherapy does that blots their copy book. The most obvious is regression to a past life, then there is the false repressed memory thing, which has been used to put many innocent people in jail by convincing weak minded individuals that their father raped them.

I know certain aspects of the hypnosis sort of work. What we are talking about is reinforced suggestion there simply is no such thing as a hypnotic trance or self hypnosis as in these CDs. The idea of repeating something three times is a tried and tested teaching method and successful suggestion therapy employs similar principles, which is why it works for some people. The placebo effect is a big part of it because in general if someone believes something will work for then it does.

I do not completely dismiss the benefits of hypnotherapy, I know numerous people who used it as a crutch while trying to give up smoking, but it was their determination to try anything to beat the weed that led them to success not some witch doctor magical trance.

I also know people who have spent thousands of pounds on
hypnotherapy, acupuncture, alternative and conventional medicine and still cannot beat it. What is always required is hard work and determination there is no easy fix, either for giving up smoking or indeed learning Morse code.

A friend of mine was concerned about his weight, he was seventeen and a half stone. He visited a hypnotherapist regularly for two years before he tried acupuncture and various alternative and conventional medicines. He also joined a gym, worked out and went swimming almost every day. Nothing worked and he is now about 30 stone. The only way to stop getting fat is to stop filling you face with food.

Life is hard and people need to get over it and knuckle down rather than looking for magical quick fixes.

  2. You are a complete idiot. Your post here clearly demonstrates your poor upbringing and miseducation as to the mind and it’s capabilities.

    • This is the sort of comment I would expect from a faker and a charlatan who preys on the gullible and weak minded. You are no better than the a mugger who steals the purses of old ladies or the spiritualist who offers to put people in touch with their dead relatives. If you had any shred of decency you would stop being a liar and get a real job.

I have read enough books on hypnosis and hypnotherapy to know exactly what I am talking about. I am more open to what the mind is capable of than you obviously are as I realise that in most people the mind is far to strong to allow someone using mumbo jumbo hypnosis to take control of it.

    • May I draw the attention of Rick and Bryan to the number of hypnotists selling breast and penis enlargement CDs on the Internet as to the legitimacy of the trade.
